Visa Application Itinerary FAQ
Do I have to buy flights before applying for the visa?
Usually not. Many consulates, including Schengen ones, accept a flight reservation or itinerary rather than a paid ticket, and some advise against buying before the visa is approved. Check the exact checklist for the consulate you're applying at — it's the only source that counts.
Will the consulate check the hotel bookings?
They can and sometimes do, and cancelling everything the day the visa arrives has led to visas being revoked. Use free-cancellation bookings you would actually stay in, and keep them until the trip is settled.
What does the itinerary need to include?
Every night accounted for with a booking reference, entry and exit dates that match the dates you're requesting, and — for a multi-country Schengen trip — a clear main destination, because that's the consulate you apply at: the country that is the purpose of the trip, or with equal purpose the one with the longest stay; first country of entry only when no main destination can be determined.
