Beach Packing List FAQ

How much sunscreen do I actually need?

SPF 30 or higher, applied about 15 minutes before you go out and reapplied at least every two hours — and immediately after swimming or toweling off. Water-resistant labels are rated for 40 or 80 minutes in the water, not for the whole afternoon. A shirt, a hat, and shade do the rest.

What is not allowed on most public beaches?

Glass containers, open fires outside designated rings, and dogs are restricted on a lot of public beaches, and alcohol rules vary by town. Some beaches also ban tents or shade structures above a certain size in summer. The managing city, county, or park lists the rules on its beach page.

How do I keep sand out of everything?

Mesh bag for gear so sand falls through, a dedicated wet bag for damp swimsuits, and a towel that stays in the trunk for feet. Shake everything out before it goes in the car, not after.
