Hawaii Packing List FAQ

What sunscreen is allowed in Hawaii?

Hawaii law bans the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate without a prescription, so buy before you fly or buy a mineral sunscreen there. Mineral formulas using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the simple swap, and reef-safe labeling is not regulated — read the active ingredients.

Do I need warm clothes in Hawaii?

For the summits, yes. Sunrise and stargazing trips to high elevation on Maui and the Big Island are cold, windy, and nothing like the beach you left an hour earlier — a fleece, a windproof layer, long pants, and closed shoes. At sea level a light layer for air conditioning and evening trade winds is enough.

Should I bring snorkel gear or rent it?

Bring your own mask if you have one that fits — fit is the whole difference between a good snorkel and a leaky hour — and rent fins if packing space is tight. Water shoes are worth the space either way: much of the shoreline is lava rock, and reef cuts are slow to heal.
