Travel Packing List FAQ

How long does my passport need to be valid?

Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry, and airlines enforce it at check-in because they carry the cost of a refused entry. Some destinations only ask for validity through your stay. Check your destination's entry requirements on your own government's travel page, and renew early — processing times move.

Do I need a voltage converter or just a plug adapter?

Look at the small print on the charger. Anything rated 100–240 V — nearly every phone charger, laptop brick, and camera charger — needs only a plug adapter for the socket shape. A converter is for single-voltage, high-wattage things like some hair dryers and curling irons, and hotel hair dryers usually make the whole question moot.

What should I copy before I go?

Photograph your passport, visa, insurance policy, and any prescriptions, and keep the copies somewhere other than the bag holding the originals. Download offline maps and your boarding passes too: the moment you most need them is usually the moment you have no signal.
