⛺ Camping Packing List

A car-camping checklist that starts with shelter and sleep, then the camp kitchen and the Ten Essentials — plus the firewood and food-storage rules campgrounds actually enforce.

Camping Packing List FAQ

What are the Ten Essentials?

The classic system: navigation, headlamp, sun protection, first aid, knife and repair kit, fire, emergency shelter, extra food, extra water, and extra clothes. It is built for the trip going wrong — an unplanned night out — not for comfort, which is why it belongs on a campground list as much as a backcountry one.

Can I bring my own firewood?

Usually not from far away. Many parks and campgrounds require firewood bought locally or certified heat-treated, because moving untreated wood spreads invasive insects and disease. Buy it at or near the campground, and burn what you buy before you leave.

How do I choose a sleeping bag rating?

A bag's number describes the temperature you can survive in it, not the temperature you will be comfortable at, and ratings vary between standards. Pick one rated below the forecast overnight low, and put an insulated pad under it — ground conduction, not air temperature, is what makes most people cold.
